Spotify has announced the acquisition of Podz, a startup whose technology generates preview clips of podcasts. Podz, according to TechCrunch, automates the process of finding key moments from episodes using machine learning trained on over 100,000 hours of audio, unlike other services podcasters can use to manually create clips. The acquisition aims to improve podcast discovery by allowing users to browse short clips rather than 30-minute or longer podcast episodes. According to Spotify, this will make it "easier for listeners to find the content they want to listen to, as well as for creators to be discovered and build a fan base." Users on its platform typically subscribe to up to 30 podcasts, up from an average of seven.
Spotify says it intends to incorporate Podz's technology into its platform, with some results expected by the end of the year.
