Apple has confirmed the purchase of Colorado-based Akonia Holographic’s, a startup which was founded in 2012. Initially Akonia’s goal was to develop holographic data storage solutions, however, the firm quickly changed course and started development of specialized lenses and displays for AR glasses.
According to Akonia’s website the company’s flagship product, called HoloMirror, uses “proprietary volume holographic media and know-how to uniquely enable thin, transparent smart glass lenses that display vibrant, full-color, wide field-of-view images.”
The acquisition by Apple is fuelling rumours of Apple’s rumored “Apple Glasses,” an in-house designed AR headset which is expected to ship in the next few years.
Apple posted their usual statement “Apple buys smaller companies from time to time, and we generally don’t discuss our purpose or plans.”
