Apple announces the death of the AirPower Mat

When Apple unveiled the new lineup of Products in their September 2017 event they unveiled their wireless charging mat AirPower which would be the only device capable of charging the series 3 Apple Watch without any extra wires, version 2 of their AirPods and also both the iPhone 8/8+ and iPhone X.

Since then we haven’t heard anymore of this device and we have seen several clones release which offer charging features with several workarounds.

Apple missed their 2018 deadline and even removed most of their references to AirPower from their website causing speculation that it had in fact been scrapped. Apple even moved on to release Apple Watch series 4 which still doesn’t have the ability to charge wirelessly on third party charging mats without the charging puck.

Today after more than a year Apple has confirmed that the AirPower mat project has been scraped.

In a statement Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering Dan Riccio said “After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.”
