One of the greatest benefits of early Google Pixel smartphones, apart from the camera itself, was the ability to back up each photo and video from your phone to Google Photos in original quality totally free of charge. Now, however, Pixel 2 owners are losing their unrestricted backup of Google Photos.
Google states on their support page that Pixel 2 will lose unlimited storage at original Image quality beginning on Saturday, January 16, 2021. At that date, owners of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will either need to use "High Quality" backup that compresses images and videos, or will need to continue using "Original Quality" at the cost of Google One storage.
Noticeably, this comes with the closure of Google Photos unlimited compressed storage on the horizon. Effective next year, Google Images will count all uploads to your account storage even though they are not of original quality.
